EMEA's Mobile Gateway: The Economic Impact of Google Play and Android
Shivani Menon
In a series of factsheets commissioned by Google, we explore the economic impact of the Play and Android ecosystem across six markets, and what developers and users say about the safety and security of their devices as well as the services they access on them.
The findings make a compelling case for the ecosystem's role as economic infrastructure. Across the EU, Google Play and Android have enabled the creation of 3 million jobs and anchor a mobile economy worth €450 billion. The research also shows a consistent pattern across every market: AI is amplifying the ecosystem's impact, with developers gaining significant productivity advantages and users saving hours of time each week on everyday tasks.
Beyond headline numbers, the factsheets examine consumer surplus, household savings on device costs, and the growing role smartphones play in accessing public services. Some highlights:
- UK: 600,000 jobs enabled by the Play ecosystem, which is more than the headcount of the UK's largest private sector employer, anchoring a mobile economy worth £104 billion.
- Poland: 130,000 direct, indirect and spill over jobs enabled, and zł540 million in developer revenue in 2025 underpinned by a mobile economy worth zł110 billion.
- Türkiye: ₺50 billion in developer revenue in 2025, with Android saving the average household ₺52,000 in upfront costs for devices.
