Maths Education in England
Benjamin Murphy
Public First conducted opinion research for Axiom Maths, exploring public attitudes towards the subject and testing how these attitudes relate to their academic attainment. We also constructed a consumer segmentation, splitting the public into five unique 'segments' based on their experiences with Maths.
We found that most people aren't scared of maths, despite the common assumption that 'maths phobia' exists across the country. People recognize the important role that maths has to play in the workforce and broader economy. We also found, however, that the UK does lack confident mathematicians, with many people saying they lack confidence doing mental maths, and rating themselves worse at mental maths than others.
