The People's Verdict: Public Attitudes towards the leadership race

Edward Shackle

In partnership with The Times newspaper Public First spoke to swing voters in the marginal seats of Esher and Walton, Southampton Itchen and Oldham East & Saddleworth to gauge public attitudes towards the leadership race. The series was entitled The People’s Verdict.

The findings from our research made the paper’s front page and went on to lead the national news cycle. You can read the three-part series here:

  • Part one: From bunny rabbit to traitor: what red wall voters think of Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak
  • Part two: More slapstick than statesmanlike: what blue wall voters think of Truss and Sunak
  • Part three: ‘Slimy and a bit cringe’: swing voters have their say on Truss and Sunak’

Our research was covered elsewhere in the media:

  • You can listen to Jonathon Simons talking about the focus group which he ran in Oldham on Times Radio;
  • Ed Shackle discuss his group in Southampton on LBC;
  • And read Ed’s interview with Politico about why voters were disengaged with the leadership race.
