Understanding anti-politics in the UK: New Polling

Public First carried out a large-scale, nationally representative poll to understand the British public’s attitudes towards politics in the UK.

Our research revealed that Anti Politics has become a useless term, masking distinct forms of political dissatisfaction. Our data suggests that what we call “anti politics” actually comprises at least three distinct traits: cynicism (think politicians only look out for themselves); disassocation (highly engaged politically but can’t find a party that represents them) ; and powerlessness ( think they have no influence). Only the third of these are in any way ‘disengaged’ from politics. The others are just angry.

Methodology

Public First conducted an anonymous, online survey of 2,000 adults across the UK from 10th Jun – 12th Oct 2024.

All results are weighted using iterative proportional fitting, or ‘raking’. Results are weighted by interlocking age and gender, region, and social grade to nationally representative proportions.
